Special Education Paraprofessional

JOB SUMMARY:  Paraprofessionals assist teachers with various tasks.  These include the following areas: lunchroom, playground, transportation, media center, copy room, classroom assistance, behavioral intervention or computer lab.

Assists students and teachers in classroom or designated area.  Duties and responsibilities may include: 

  1. Provides direct instructional support to individual and/or groups of students, monitors behavior and attends designated classes/activities with the students as outlined in the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and directed by instructor.

  2. Assists in technological programs such as computer labs and instructional technology.

  3. Performs media center duties under the direction of the media center specialist.

  4. Assists teachers in maintaining discipline.

  5. Prepares material necessary for activities in the classroom as directed by the teacher.

  6. Supervision of students as directed by a licensed teacher/supervisor.

  7. Other tasks as assigned by the supervising principal, teacher, head cook and or other supervisor. (such as washing tables or clerking during student lunch)

  8. Maybe assigned van driving duties.



  1. High school diploma or equivalent required.

  2. Must meet federal NCLB requirements by one of the following:

  • Passing score on Parapro exam

  • Complete portfolio

  • Two-year post secondary degree or equivalent


  1. Prior experience working with children is preferred but not required.

Special Knowledge or Skills:    

  1. Ability to work well with students and staff. 

  2. Collaborates, supports and implements rules (i.e. Bully proofing, Playground rules).

  3. Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job.

  4. Sensitivity to the requirements of special needs children.

  5. Basic computer, math and language skills.

Behavioral Interventionist

Upsala area School is seeking a Behavioral Interventionist to join our team.  Interventionists will provide skills-based and supportive behavioral services to youth, staff, and families within the Upsala School District. Duties may include assessment, observation, and implementation of behavior modification plans in which staff can utilize in classroom and community setting. Additionally, development of curriculum for group settings, educational and training opportunities for school and parents, and consultation for youth, staff, and families and completing skills sessions with clients.

Essential Functions include:

  • Create and implement behavior modification plans in classroom and community settings

  • Develop curriculum for group activities

  • Develop educational and training opportunities for schools and parents

  • Review and promptly respond to referrals. 

  • Coordinate and conduct intake sessions to include: complete intake paperwork with the family, obtain billing information, authorizations and continued care requests as needed.  This will be done in conjunction with the clinical supervisor

  • Complete a treatment plan consistent with the needs identified in the evaluation, by the family and by the referring worker.  Ensure the clinical supervisor signs the treatment plan

  • Ensure all documentation is completed as mandated (current diagnostic assessments, ROI’s and renewing ROI’s, treatment plans, functional assessments, progress notes within 24 hours of service delivery)

  • Prepare and provide content to clients in an individual and group setting

  • Facilitate and co-facilitate client groups as agreed upon with the clinical supervisor and colleagues

  • Maintain contact with the referral source as agreed upon  

  • Ensure a diagnostic assessment has been completed initially and annually thereafter

  • Conduct transition planning and referrals as needed

  • Participate in Rule 29 and CTSS Supervision and Consultation at which time progress notes are submitted to the supervisor

Qualifications include:

  • Must qualify as a mental health practitioner as defined by the Minnesota Department of Human Services in one of the following ways:

    • Has at least 2,000 hours (approximately two years working full-time) of supervised work experience in the delivery of mental health services. OR

    • Holds a master's or other graduate degree in behavioral sciences or related fields. OR

    • Holds a bachelor's degree in behavioral sciences or related fields and completes a practicum or internship that (1) requires direct interaction with adults or children served, and (2) is focused on behavioral sciences or related fields.

  • Experience and training working with children.

  • A valid driver’s license
