Retirement

At the conclusion of this school year, we bid a heartfelt farewell to three legendary staff members whose combined decades of service have shaped the very fabric of our district. Their departures mark the end of an era, but their influence will resonate in our hallways for years to come.

Denise Cheney is retiring after 32 years as the band director and choir teacher at Upsala Schools. Denise’s commitment to her students and to building an exceptional music program has been truly remarkable. Through concerts, performances, lessons, and countless hours of preparation, she has inspired generations of students and helped create memories that will last a lifetime. She has brought professional-level artistry to our various district and community venues, teaching students that harmony is achieved through both discipline and passion.

Renee Scholz began her career in Upsala as a paraprofessional and substitute teacher before becoming a math teacher, a role she served in for 26 years. With a career dedicated to the “Aha!” moments of logic and problem-solving, Ms. Scholz has provided thousands of students with the mathematical foundation necessary for success in a complex world. Her passion and drive for continuous learning and professional growth embody our mission of being life-long learners.

Dan Cheney dedicated many years to leading our plays and musicals as drama director, helping students grow in confidence, creativity, and performance. Over the last eight years, he has also served as our media specialist and community education coordinator, continuing to support students and our community in many meaningful ways. His decades of work have created invaluable opportunities for our students while providing enriching, local entertainment for the community.

The collective impact of these three on Upsala Area Schools is immeasurable, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, mentorship, and inspiration that will continue to benefit our students and community for generations to come.
